There are a few kinds of aesthetic and skin rejuvenation treatments that go viral, but amidst the snake oil and the repackaged common sense advice, some new treatments have the potential to provide a lot of what influencers and celebrities promise.
One of these is polynucleotides, an injectable biological compound that is derived from fish DNA that can help with skin rejuvenation in various different ways, including removing dark circles around the eyes, boosting collagen production, smoothing fine lines and even treating thinning hair.
As it is a fairly new treatment, there are some important facts that you should be aware of regarding what it is, what it does and how you can prepare for treatment.
What Are Polynucleotides?
On a broad level, polynucleotides are compounds made up of chains of nucleotides, most commonly found in the DNA and RNA that form our genetic code.
Given that they are the building blocks of the building blocks of life itself, polynucleotides are not only very important, but they are also very versatile in their use.
In the specific context of skin rejuvenation, polynucleotides are fragments of DNA, typically acquired from trout or salmon, but are similar in structure to human DNA.
They are then injected into the body and help to boost the human body’s production of collagen and elastin, two compounds that are vital for helping boost skin texture, elasticity and plumpness.
What Do They Do?
Polynucleotides are a fantastic skin rejuvenation treatment because they work with your body to improve moisture retention, boost skin texture, improve the rate at which skin refreshes and help restore thinner skin, such as just below your eyes.
They can be used anywhere on the body to help with the above, but they tend to be used either specifically for under-eye treatments or as a replacement for dermal fillers.
Typically, the effect will differ depending on your age. It is often used by people in their 20s and early 30s as a subtle tweakment, but as you get older, the benefits of the treatment will be more noticeable.
Do You Need To Prepare Before Your Polynucleotide Treatment?
You will have an initial consultation with a skin expert to see if polynucleotide is right for you and set realistic expectations for your treatment. Polynucleotide works gradually on a time frame of weeks and months rather than days.
As well as this, some people who have fish allergies, are undergoing IVF treatment or have an active skin condition, should not have polynucleotide treatment.
Typically, you will not need to prepare before your treatment, but you will have the area cleaned and numbing cream applied to reduce the discomfort caused by the injections.
The entire appointment takes around an hour, half of which is to ensure the numbing cream takes effect.
Is There Any Downtime?
As with a lot of non-surgical cosmetic treatments, there is no downtime, and you can go on with your day as normal after treatment.
There are some side effects, such as swelling and redness around the injection marks, but these will disappear in a matter of days, and the treatment will start to work immediately.
