4 Common Myths About Lip Fillers Debunked

Do you want a new look to match the new year? Lip fillers are one of the most popular nonsurgical aesthetic treatments in the world, and can help to enhance your natural pout, give you confidence and provide extra definition.

They are popular because they are affordable, provide a natural plump look, and do not require surgery or lengthy recovery times.

However, as with other procedures such as Botox, the popularity of dermal and lip fillers has led to quite a few myths developing around the procedure, which we are more than happy to explain and debunk.

Here are four of the questions we are asked most, where the myth comes from and why the answer is not what you may have been told.

Are Lip Fillers Always Obvious?

The obvious first question, often inspired by duck pouts and the recent trend of “Gen Z pouts”, is whether a lip filler will look conspicuous, obvious, or even fake-looking.

The answer is a resounding no. Lip fillers, when undertaken by a skilled aesthetic professional, are designed to provide a subtle, natural-looking enhancement, not unnaturally big lips.

The right clinic will:

  • Only use high-quality, well-tolerated dermal filler products in your lips.

  • Have an understanding of the anatomy of your lips and use a precise, targeted approach to injecting filler.

  • Will focus on your needs and wants, discussing what is possible at your consultation and being conservative with the filler.

Do You Have To Commit Long-Term To Lip Fillers?

Another question we receive a lot is whether lip fillers are permanent and have long-term effects on your lips. Once again, the answer is no.

Our lip fillers use hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally produced by the body and typically found in the joints, the eyes and the skin. This is why fillers are also used to add smoothness and plumpness to the skin.

As a natural substance, your body will naturally absorb it into the skin, which means that the effects will diminish over time as your hyaluronic acid levels return to normal. Exactly how long it takes depends on your metabolism.

If your fillers are not working for you, you do not have to put up with it either; model Brooks Nader underwent a procedure to dissolve her filler according to People Magazine, using an enzyme to dissolve the excess hyaluronic acid.

What Can You Do If You Do Not Like Your Lip Fillers?

  • Wait it out. Lip fillers are not permanent, and your body naturally metabolises the ingredients.

  • Have a touch-up procedure to sculpt the look to how you like it.

  • Have it dissolved. A prescription enzyme can be injected to safely remove the filler and give you a fresh start.

Are Lip Fillers Painful?

Lip fillers should never be painful; at worst, they should feel like a slight series of pinpricks, a small amount of pressure or pinching.

Numbing creams and gentle methods of injection are used to make them pain-free, but if you feel anxious during the procedure, we can take breaks, work around you or use soothing cooling treatments to ease your lips.

Do Lip Fillers Need A Lot Of Downtime?

Your lips will be swollen after the injections, which can not only hide the true effects of the procedure but also may make it appear as if it has a lot of downtime.

Whilst it can take up to two weeks for the final results to be visible, you do not have to stop your day-to-day activities and can even have them done during a lunch break.
